MedSpas: Patient Safety and Accreditation

Across the globe, public and media concerns are growing that unregulated medspas may put patients at risk. Reports have raised questions about inadequate training, unsafe or counterfeit products, and inconsistent oversight across the industry. At the same time, the rapid expansion of the medspa sector presents an opportunity to establish a stronger, more ethical model of patient care.

The Aesthetic Surgery Journal recently published “MedSpas: Patient Safety and Accreditation,”  by QUAD, a founding member, Robert Singer, MD, FACS, along with coauthors Mark Jewell, MD, FACS, Renato Saltz, MD, FACS,  and Thomas Fiala, MD, FACS, FRCSC. The article examines the rapid growth of the MedSpa industry and the increasing need for standardized oversight to protect patient safety.

As minimally invasive aesthetic procedures continue to grow in popularity, the authors emphasize that patient demand must be balanced with evidence-based safety protocols and clinical accountability. The article explores concerns related to inconsistent regulation, varying provider qualifications, and the expansion of aesthetic services into nontraditional healthcare settings.

Dr. Singer and his coauthors position accreditation not only as a compliance measure, but also as a fundamental component of patient-centered care and long-term industry credibility. They describe accreditation as a framework for evaluating practitioner credentials, infection prevention practices, emergency preparedness, facility operations, and adherence to ethical and regulatory standards. Through this lens, accredited facilities may be better equipped to deliver consistent, high-quality patient care while reducing preventable complications and liability risks. The authors also call for stronger collaboration among physicians, professional societies, and accrediting organizations to advance transparency, accountability, and patient safety throughout the aesthetic care industry.

QUAD A’s new Non-Surgical Aesthetic & Wellness (MedSpa) Accreditation Program is helping set a new standard for the industry by establishing operational benchmarks, strengthening quality assurance, and promoting safe clinical practices within medspas.
