Messaging Safety as a Value in Patient Choice

For many years physicians have focused on healthcare safety in conversations among colleagues, but unfortunately, many patients take their safety for granted. This is a mistake. Responsible physicians invest heavily to ensure their centers are safe, while less scrupulous physicians may not, risking the well-being of their patients. Unfortunately, patients cannot always tell the difference. It is long past time to get the patients involved in this conversation, to say unequivocally that some settings are safe while others are not; patients must take charge of their decisions to avoid unnecessary risk.
